Jaisalmer city was founded by the Rajput king,Jaisal Singh in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer is known as the “Golden City” of India because the artitecture of the temples, forts and the town down, are built of finely sculptured yellow sandstone. The “Golden City” lies in the heart of the Thar Desert and is close to the Pakistan border. Jaisalmer fort is the major tourist attraction site of the city, also known as Sonar Quila (Golden Fort).
